YOUR DISTRICT

Starting June 4, 2025, May Street has been fully closed between Dalrymple Drive and East Lakeshore Drive. This closure will remain in place until fall 2026, and affects all vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists. The closure is necessary to allow for major infrastructure work that will:

  • Reconnect University Lake and City Park Lake through new water channels and dredging

  • Improve flood protection and stormwater management

  • Enhance safety and access for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers

  • Expand recreational opportunities like kayaking and canoeing

Important Update: May Street Closure & University Lakes Project

While this work is a big step forward for our lakes and public spaces, we understand the closure will impact daily commutes, especially on LSU game days. Drivers are encouraged to detour via Stanford, Perkins, or Government Street, which could add 7–10 minutes to travel times. Nearby Dalrymple Drive is also undergoing intermittent closures due to related I-10 construction.

Some features originally planned, like a new boardwalk near the May Street bridge, are currently on hold pending future funding.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve our community’s infrastructure and environment. If you have questions or concerns, feel free to reach out or visit universitylakesproject.org for updates.
